Tim Whitehead

There are many fine tenor players on the current British scene but Tim Whitehead is undoubtedly one of the best we have

Peter Lund – Crescendo

It’s a real pleasure to welcome one of the finest saxophonists in British jazz to launch our new season. Tim Whitehead has been consistently defining and re-defining boundaries in contemporary jazz with his lyrical, passionate sound and fresh compositions. During his career, Tim has played extensively throughout the UK and Europe, and more recently in the USA with American pianist Phil DeGreg. Currently, Tim is Musician in Residence at Tate Britain – this prestigious post created through a grant from the Leverhulme Trust.

Over his career, Tim has been involved in some groundbreaking projects. He was one of the founding members of the radical big band, Loose Tubes and has worked with the great players in European jazz such as Django Bates, Jim Mullen and many more. It is however as composer and bandleader that Tim has enjoyed most critical acclaim; a quartet with the brilliant Giovanni MIrobassi in 2005 led to the award winning album Lucky Boys and in 2000, Ian Carr described his playing on Personal Standards as reaching ‘an extraordinary level of musical and emotional expression… he seems to reach a Jarrett-like state of ecstasy.’

For your own personal ecstasy, get your seats booked for the first gig of our season.
