Josephine Daveis

A lyrical voice infused with a gritty, relentless dynamism

JazzWise Magazine

One of the outstanding new sax players on the block, Josephine studied at the Guildhall school of Music and Drama with Stan Sulzman and Martin Hathaway, and whilst there won the 1999 Perrier Young Jazz Award with a quintet co-lead with trumpeter Tom Allan. She has since performed and recorded with the London Jazz Orchestra, Ronnie Scott's Vanguard Band (led by Gerard Presencer), Jamie Cullum, The Laurence Cottle Big Band, Sax Appeal, Will Young, The BBC Big Band, Matt Wates sextet, Gareth Lockrane's GrooveYard as well as a two year stint in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Beyond playing in other peoples’ bands, Josephine formed her own quintet in the summer of 2006  and they have  one album 'Elation' already available. They were back in the studio at the beginning of this year to record a new album, 'The Brink', which will be released later in the year combined with a country-wide publicity tour. Both recordings feature the original compositions of the bandleader whose various influences include the music of Maria Schnieder, Kenny Wheeler, Walt Weiskopf and Chris Potter.
