The Spin Jazz Club is one of the finest and most atmospheric jazz clubs in the UK. It was set up by Oxford musicians, Pete Oxley, Mark Doffman and Raf Mizraki in 1999; now in its second decade, the club has put on over 500 gigs, has twice won the Performing Rights Society Awards (2001/2002) and been shortlisted four times in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards as one of the top three jazz clubs in Britain (2006–2009). The atmosphere is fashionably grungy, relaxed and welcoming, and the music hip and happening.
The club has presented some of the most accomplished jazz musicians in the UK such as John Etheridge, Gilad Atzmon, Tim Garland, Tony Kofi, John Donaldson, Art Themen, Bobby Wellins, Orphy Robinson, John Parricelli, Deirdre Cartwright, Mark Lockheart, Mornington Lockett, Chris Garrick, Steve Waterman,Damon Brown, Jonathan Gee, Dave O’Higgins and many more. Our name has spread beyond the UK and from time to time, we like to present musicians from Europe and the States on tour in the UK; some world class players such as Wolfgang Muthspiel, Jeff Ballard, Lonnie Plaxico, Paul Bollenbach and David Binney have graced the stage of the club. Many musicians describe the club as one of the best venues to play anywhere in the UK and our audiences enjoy the eclectic programming of the club – a chance to hear a wide range of contemporary jazz, latin and funk.
Located right in the heart of Oxford’s historic city centre, the club sits in a suitably bohemian alleyway off Oxford High Street. Many regard a club setting as the best way to experience live jazz and with its intimate atmosphere, excellent acoustics, candle-lit tables and evocative lighting, the Spin is the quintessential jazz venue. We attract a lively mix of jazz cognoscenti, students, and those who are just plain curious. While the sounds compare with top jazz venues anywhere, entry is not expensive (students can get into any gig on the night for just £6) and drinks are served at pub rather than club prices (there is a comprehensive wine list and a selection of real ales).
The club runs every Thursday over three programmes: Autumn (September–December); Spring (January–April) and Summer (May–August). You can book seats in advance for any gig simply by selecting the band that you want to hear and then click on ‘Book Tickets’. If you don’t want to book a seat in advance, you can just turn up on the night and take your chance – there are almost always seats available when doors open and there is always plenty of standing room.
